The Sinclair Method (TSM)

The Sinclair Method (TSM) is an evidence-based approach to treating Alcohol Use
Disorder (AUD). TSM leverages a process called pharmacological extinction, where
specific medications are used to gradually reduce the brain’s reinforcement of drinking
behavior. By blocking the pleasurable effects of alcohol, the method retrains the brain to
reduce cravings and dependence over time.

TSM supports individualized recovery goals—whether you aim for controlled drinking
or complete abstinence. These goals can evolve as you progress in your journey,
offering flexibility tailored to your needs.

Why Choose the Sinclair Method

TSM offers numerous benefits, including:

- Reduced Cravings: Gradual diminishment of the brain's association between alcohol and pleasure.
- Personalized Goals: Effective for individuals seeking controlled drinking or abstinence.
- Sustainability: Long-term results without requiring immediate cessation of drinking.
- Scientific Backing: Proven through clinical research as a successful method for treating AUD.

Who can benefit from TSM?

This method may be helpful for:
- Individuals struggling with alcohol dependency who have found other methods
ineffective.
- Those seeking a less rigid, non-abstinence-based approach to recovery.
- Individuals ready to explore controlled drinking or gradually transition to
abstinence.

How TSM Works

Naltrexone, a non-addictive prescription medication, blocks the release of endorphins—the chemicals in your brain that create the “buzz” associated with alcohol. Over time, this process retrains your brain to stop linking alcohol with pleasure, gradually reducing your cravings and interest in drinking. This effect, known as pharmacological extinction, is the cornerstone of TSM’s success.

Key points about Naltrexone:

  • Safe and Health Canada approved for alcohol dependence.
  • Non-addictive with no euphoric or depressive side effects.
  • Covered by most insurance plans.
With TSM, Naltrexone is taken only when you plan to drink. Think of it like a seatbelt: just as you wouldn’t drive without one, you shouldn’t drink without first taking Naltrexone. If you drink once a week, you take the medication once a week. If you drink less frequently, you’ll only take it when needed.
The Sinclair Method relies on the principle of extinguishing behavior through lack of reinforcement. When alcohol consumption no longer produces a rewarding effect, your brain gradually stops seeking it out. Research supports this method, demonstrating that TSM can lead to a meaningful reduction in alcohol use within an average of four months.
• Gradual reduction in cravings and drinking behavior.
• No requirement for intensive therapy, though medical guidance is essential.
• Works well for individuals with a family history of alcohol use disorders.
• Lifelong tool for managing alcohol use effectively.
